February 9, 2022 off to hilton Head island
I left Aiken on Wednesday morning at 8am for a 4 day getaway to Hilton Head. With overnight temps at 32° it left the ground frozen. The Sun was hidden behind a cloudy sky and the beautiful misty fog made the scenery before me a photographer's dream. As I often do I stopped by the side of the road to take this beautiful picture. Don't you just love cows?
First things first. Eating lunch at the "Salty Dog "restaurant at the marina on South Beach Sea Pines. Salty Dog is the quintessential touristy place to eat and it's a great spot overlooking the marina. I love their shrimp salad plate. Next is shopping (or window shopping) on South Beach. Great shops and not so many that it's overwhelming. Next, sit in one of the many rockers or benches and enjoy the sun, people, and boat watching. IMPORTANT, only go to Hilton Head in February. Spring summer and fall are insanely crowded.
If you read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time " and loved it as I did be sure to attend the theater show if it's around your area. The play is an unusual production, very engrossing, and beautifully presented. Highly recommend. I saw it at the Theater next to the Art Center of Coastal Carolina, in Shelter Cove. A wonderful theater that is also on my highly recommended list.
I was very lucky to be on Hilton Head while the "Gullah Celebration" was in progress. I went to the Art Center, next door to the theater, and caught the Opening of the Gullah Art Show. It was a fantastic event and the art is so joyful and colorful. One of the artists I particularly liked was Amiri Farris. look him up on the internet.
A perfect example of happy colors. I bought this for hot flashes and the Hope is for them to go away.
Everyone knows about the Lighthouse. Be sure to climb up to the top. You can rest on the landings on the way up and read about the Lighthouse and Hilton Head at each stop.
The iconic" Quarter Deck" Restaurant next to the Lighthouse has been knocked down and the new one is under construction. If all goes well the opening will be in April 2022. I hope the food will be as fantastic as the building.

Time to take a tea break. The French Cafe at Shelter Cove is a perfect place for a yummy bakery treat and a meal.

Pickle Ball, Biking, and Walking are the most popular things to do on the island. No pickleball or biking for me on this trip. So much to do, so little time.
Sea Pines South Beach
I did find the time to do a lot of walking though. This is a paradise for walkers.
I love this shot and I was really happy to catch the bird on the fence. Wondering where this is? Lawton Stables. I'm about to go on a 1-hour trail ride. I don't know what I was thinking. I haven't been on a horse in 50 years. Before I go, meet the friends I made at the farmyard at the stables.

Here's our fearless leader. I'm right behind her and she's telling me about Armadillos. They have 4 babies at a time and they are always the same gender. Who knew? Or was she kidding, do you know?
See, I really did giddy-up and go. It was great fun, but when I got off Lucy after the ride I had to hold on to her side, I could barely stand up. My hips killed and my thighs, thank god for Motrin.
What's not to love about a beach. And believe me, it's much better than a trail ride.

There are always wonderful things to see on the roadside and I can't help but stop to take pictures of them. This is why sometimes a 4-hour road trip might take me 8 hours. Is it obvious I have a thing for churches and old cemeteries?

And, of course, there's always the train you have to wait for to go by. This train took 20 minutes. There must have been 200 or more cars. This is great news, it means someone is probably going to get their refrigerator this week.
