Columbia County, Augusta Georgia
March 25, 2022. It was a beautiful day today so I ventured out to find kayaking and biking areas near our home in Aiken SC. I stopped at the visitors center in Augusta and they directed me to Columbia County. What a find! I had no idea such a wealth of parks, and areas for recreation we had right in our back yard.
Today was a scouting day, but I will return to take advantage of all this county has to offer.
HEADGATES
The Augusta Canal Begins Here
A bridge takes you across the Canal. There are hundreds of locks on the bridge fence. I see this on a lot now, but the first and original site was in Paris on one of the bridges crossing the River Seine.
The Visitor Center house at top left and bottom right was built in 1850 as a place to house the Canal keeper at the head gate.
Memorial to a Fallen Soldier
This is a beautiful Memorial for a young soldier Killed in action. It took my breath away, and is a sad reminder of the horror and waste of war.
The flags fly at half-mast in honor of
Madeleine Albright.
We'll End on a happy Note. Spring at last.
